Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets within or on the surface of an ovary. Many women will develop at least one cyst during their life. In most cases, cysts are painless and cause no symptoms. However, ovarian cysts — especially those that have ruptured — sometimes produce serious symptoms. Symptoms could include pelvic pain, nausea similar to that experienced during pregnancy and heaviness in your abdomen.
A cyst on your ovary may be found during a pelvic exam. If a cyst is suspected, a gynecologist often advises further testing to determine its type and treatment course. A pregnancy test and pelvic ultrasound may be utilized to identify the specific type of cyst. Dependent upon the severity, a gynecologist may suggest oral contraceptive/ drug treatment or surgical removal.
